Here’s your chance to help some teens. Some teenagers I know are going on a mission trip to El Salvador in June. They’re trying to raise money and asking for donations. Our family has been providing support for a girl in this country through Compassion for the past decade, so we’re particularly interested in this trip.
So, for the month of April, we’ll donate all profits from Volleyball Zen t-shirt sales to their trip. If you were waiting for a good reason to buy one of our shirts, this is the reason and April is the time! (This includes today, March 31).

I don’t have any tattoos, but if I was going to get one, it would probably be a simple volleyball graphic. So, with the popularity of tattoos these days, I have to believe that there are a few volleyball ones around. If you’ve got one, and if you can take a tasteful picture of it, and if you’d like me to share it here, send it or post it to our Facebook page.

My first opportunity to see pro beach volleyball happened purely by chance, in 1985 or 1986. Up until that time, I had only seen pictures and read about it in Volleyball Monthly magazine. I lived in Pennsylvania, home from college for the summer, and pretty far away from any tour stop. But I happened to be in Chicago visiting a friend the same weekend that the Chicago Open was happening.
This was back in the days when there were no bleachers and no admission prices. I just sat in the sand beside the court with my camera and took some great action shots of Smith/Stoklos, Hovland/Dodd, OB, and the rest. Alas, Karch was away with the National Team at the time.
The AVP has come a long way since then, but that informal atmosphere was a great way to see my first AVP tournament!

Somehow I missed this announcement, but there will soon be a women’s professional indoor volleyball league! Rather than me providing all the details, you can check it all out at the WNVA web site.

Welcome to the Vollleyball Zen blog. Our goal for this blog is to educate, inform, inspire, motivate…you name it. I’ll also be telling stories from my experiences as a volleyball fan, and as a 5′ 10″ amateur swing hitter. Enjoy, and give us your feedback!
